Web Advanced Space Developer Interface

Funded by ESA's GSTP programme and carried out in collaboration with ACROTEC Srl, the project aimed to develop a federated multi-cloud platform that would allow space-based Earth observation (EO) experts to easily transform their algorithms into applications in the cloud. WASDI facilitates access to data, in particular from the Copernicus programme, but not only, by automatically connecting to different providers. The system is designed to make it easier for researchers to focus on science by delegating the burden of getting their algorithms into the cloud to the platform. It is therefore possible to develop one's own algorithms in different programming languages (Python, ENVI IDL, Matlab/Octave, JS, Java, C#) using familiar tools, without the need to adapt to a new environment, simply by integrating the appropriate library. When the algorithm is ready, simply drag and drop a zip file containing the source code to see your processor available in the cloud, with all the scalability and performance benefits that brings.

The platform has been tested and installed initially on the ONDA DIAS, and then also on other DIASes and cloud infrastructures, allowing users to complete the full cycle of EO processing data without the need to download EO products on their local PC. Users can search and import EO images from the Sentinel Catalogue, run SNAP workflows, navigate bands on a 2D and 3D map. Experts can develop their own processors and drag and drop it into WASDI. The project was evaluated by ESA at TLR6.

Project follw-up

Since 2020, FadeOut Software has set up a start-up in Luxembourg in collaboration with the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology to maintain and commercialise the platform.
